Dear Fall River Families,
Happy New Year! As we start a new year, it is always a good time to remember what was GREAT about last year. One GREAT thing about 2016 was the continued generosity of our school community through our food drive and giving tree. We collected more than 3955 items for the food and sock drive and MANY families in our community will receive lovely gifts from the giving tree. Thank you for caring for others even in these tough economic times!
Another GREAT thing about 2016 is the continued excellent behavior choices our students make. Every day, I am proud to see our students not only meeting our ROCKS expectations, but exceeding them! Please see the insert in this newsletter reviewing our efforts to teach, practice, reward, and reinforce our students’ good choices.
On the topic of behavior, do you know that there are studies out showing that inconsistent bed times and lack of sleep are the top reason for student behavior issues? You may not realize how much going to bed at different times or too late can impact your child’s social/emotional/academic success. The New Year is a great time to start a new sleep routine for your child! For more info, see a story about this study at http://www.npr.org/2013/12/16/251462015/why-a-regular-bedtime-is-important-for-children
Do you have or know a kiddo ready for kindergarten next year? Do you have a friend hoping to open enroll a child at Fall River? Don’t forget—Open Enrollment for grades K-5 for the 2017-2018 school year AND Kindergarten Registration for the 2017-2018 school year are happening right now! Both application windows close January 17. After that, applicants may be placed on a wait list. Please see our website for more information and materials.
A reminder as we head into not only 2017, but also the rest of winter—please send your kiddos with coats, hats and gloves to school on cold days. It is our policy to send all students out to recess unless the temperature and/or wind chill is 15 degrees or below—fresh air and physical exercise our crucial to our students’ well-being and health. Don’t forget to have them bring all their warm clothes home, too! Feel free to drop by any time and check out the lost and found.
And the most important reminder—please use the crosswalks, sidewalks, and pick up/drop off lane rather than having your children cross in the middle of Deerwood or in the parking lot. We have had calls from concerned drivers who have come far too close to hitting students—please help us keep all of our kiddos safe!
Also, ONLY preschool parents and those requiring handicap parking spaces (please have your parking pass in your window) may use the parking lot for pick up and drop off. All other drivers must use the loop for pick up and drop off. Thank you for helping our traffic move smoothly!
I hope you all had a safe and relaxing winter vacation, and everyone is refreshed and ready for more learning and fun at Fall River Elementary! Thank you again for helping us deliver excellence in education to all of our students at Fall River Elementary, where we have The Courage to Be Outstanding! --Dr. Guthals, Principal
